ART JARGON
Chiaroscuro -
In drawing, painting, and the graphic arts, chiaroscuro (ke-ära-skooro) concerns the rendering of forms through a balanced contrast between light and dark areas. The technique that was introduced during the Renaissance, is effective in creating an illusion of depth and space around the principal figures in a composition. Leonardo Da Vinci and Rembrandt were painters who excelled in the use of this technique.

Avoid High Temperatures and Humidity!
Extreme changes in humidity and temperature can make the canvas and wood stretchers supporting the painting expand or contract. This expansion or contraction can damage the painting. Canvas and wood stretchers can absorb moisture, which may cause them to expand on humid days and shrink on dry days. Oil paint can crack and flake off as a result of the expansion and contraction of the canvas and wood stretchers.
To properly display your oil paintings, try to maintain the following temperature range:
Winter Summer
Temp: 65-70 degrees F Temp: 70-75 degrees F
Humidity 40%-45% Humidity 45%-55%
